Coheed And Cambria are smack dab in the middle of their historic Neverender tour, where they're playing all four albums in four consecutive nights accross the US, and in London. We were lucky enough to get to speak to guitarist, Travis Stever about the tour, skating, and what to expect from them in the future.
What are you up to, Travis?
Nothing really, we actually have the day off from the rehearsals that we've been doing. We've been working for two and half months on this. So we have the day off because tomorrow we're starting to get into the groove and preparation for the shows and stuff.
What gave you guys the idea for doing this sort of tour as opposed to playing one or two nights in several big cities around the US?
It's been an idea thrown around numerous times even when there were only two albums. Even a couple of years ago we were toying with the idea of doing one in its entirety because it was the anniversary of its release. And with that I think it spawned into, "Well if we're gonna do one album, why don?t we just do all of the albums in order?" And obviously dealing with concept albums, it makes sense to do it in order, you know? I'm not sure who exactly came up with it, but it was always discussed as a band.
This style of a tour is probably much more intimate and personal being that you're playing for the same people four nights in a row. Is this something you think you would rather do instead of a normal tour?
I would think, but we'll see. We did "A Night With Coheed In Cambria" in Chicago years ago and it was cool. Man, we had a great time. It was only one night though, and this is four nights with people that really give a crap. I would think that that's better than playing to a crowd where you can never tell.
Are there any songs that you guys normally don?t play live that you're nervous about playing?
Numerous. There were songs that we had to re-learn, ones we never played as a band, ones where we played as a band but it had been years. There are 50 songs, so it?s a lot of material. We have our hands full, but I think the most important part of it is to have a good time and make sure the show goes on either way.
What album do you think you'll enjoy playing the most?
Right now I'm really enjoying Good Apollo One. It's between that and In Keeping because those are albums where it's gonna be really cool to watch how the crowd reacts to seeing them live. I'm really excited about all of the albums, but those two have been fun to tackle. I think that to go through it as flawless as possible will be? well, rewarding sounds stupid, but I'll be really excited to have it come across the way we had been playing it in rehearsal. I guess rewarding is not a bad thing.
No, not at all. What's something that you can't tour without?
Clothes? Well, I can't tour without music, I need that. Though there are times I don't even feel like listening to anything, it's a necessity for me. Before the times of the iPod, it was a booklet of CD's.
What's a weird song on your iPod that people wouldn't think that would be on there? I don't know, I can't think of anything off hand but I've got a lot of weird stuff.
Are there any that when you put your iPod on shuffle you're just like "Whoa, I definitely didn't put that on there."
Oh, of course. You could get some "Don't Pay The Ferryman" or "Lady In Red" by Chris De Burg. Those came on one night when we were sitting around having a Demon Fire, which is where we just sit around, have some drinks, and listen to some music by a big bonfire at my house. Sometimes some crazy stuff will come on. It could be some Billy Ocean, "When The Going Gets Tough," or who knows, maybe even some Phil Collins.
There's nothing wrong with some Phil.
Oh no, of course not. I think it?s a nostalgic kind of thing, but I'm very into the nostalgic part of music and remembering things through songs. It's one of my favorite things. I guess if you're the kind of person where music is a big part of your life, memories are built from music in a lot of different ways.
Yeah that happens all the time with me.
Yeah, you'll hear a few stupid songs but they still mean something to me, so.
What's your favorite and least favorite thing about touring?
As I get older I start to have more things in my life, I'm married and have a dog. Obviously that's tough when you have to leave for three months and have very limited time home, but that's really the only thing. Sometimes when there's a tight schedule and you're running around like crazy and you don?t even have time to go to the bathroom -- that can be tough. Up at 7 a.m., take a flight, only to get a connecting flight to get to the place where you have to play, just to get on a flight right after. But to be honest, it's all in the name of the game. It's something I've always wanted to do -- just to be able to go around and play music, and I'm able to do that. Those things are very small in the big picture when it comes down to it.
What's the strangest thing a fan has done to get your attention?
I've never seen anyone really do anything that crazy to anyone in the band. Kids have been strange about some things though. I've seen people be kind of creepy about how they want to get to the band, but nothing out of control. We have really great fans. They're really dedicated. If anything, the only thing that could be weird is if someone knows something about you that you didn?t think anyone knew. But that's not as much our fans or fans in general, that's more of the fact that the lovely internet has turned into a spot to figure out anything about any person.
What's it like having a song in Rock Band?
Obviously it's really cool. I'm not gonna lie, I have it. I think I played the guitar once, I don?t even think I've done the vocal part. I know Claudio did it once when we were over his house hanging out -- that was hilarious. I did the guitar thing when I first got it and didn't do so hot. I never tried it again because I feel kind of weird with it being our tune. But it's funny because I've had people over and they were playing Rock Band, and I hear that going on and I'm just like "Jesus, that?s so weird." I've been over other peoples' houses and it's happened, it's pretty surreal. But it's an honor to be a part of something like that because lets face it, music sales nowadays aren?t doing too well. And when your music can be apart of something like video games or movies, it's kind of more substantial.
There's always alternate ways of getting it out there.
Yeah, exactly. So being apart of Rock Band was really cool for us.
Is there a new album in the works?
Yeah we've been throwing out some ideas that have been pretty cool. Especially with working on the old material, there's some influence from that. So it's kind of like a mixture of everything. I'm excited for the stuff that we've demo'd and the stuff we've jammed on in rehearsal. It's been a nice break from working on the old stuff.
When is that expected to come out?
I'm not really sure, so I don?t even want to say a date. But all I can say is that we've been working on stuff. We still do have our hands full. Even in the early new year we have some stuff coming up. I would say after we're done with everything in the spring maybe we'll get to really start to crack down on getting the album done, you know?
Yeah for sure. Do any of you guys skate?
I did for a little bit when I was younger, but I wasn't very good at it. I was able to ollie and kickflip, but I was never really good. I used to hang out with a lot of people who skate, and I kind of left it to them to be the good skaters. My friend was funny though. One day he was at a skatepark and he called me, he's much older now, but he still likes to go to the park cause he was a skater for years. But he and his friend stopped by a skatepark and he was like, "Oh man, its just annoying when those kids that don't skate are just doing dumb stuff on the side and causing mischief." And I said, "Well to be honest man, that was me." When you don?t have anything to do and you cant skate for crap, you have to do something to pass the time. So that's what those idiots are doing on the side, and I'm proud to say that I was one of those idiots. One of the morons on the side smoking cigarettes and making noise, you know? I thought that was kind of funny.
